Mattocks

More About the 2 types of Mattocks

Grubbing Mattock

The ‘grubbing mattock’ or ‘cutter mattock’ that has two blades, one at 90 degrees to the shaft, like the adze, and one in line with the blade like an axe.
This makes this tool perfect for digging over ground with the adze type blade and cutting roots with the axe blade.

Pick Mattock

The ‘pick mattock’ sees the replacement of the axe part of the head with a pick.
This makes the tool good for digging with the adze blade and levering with the ‘pick’ spike.
Pick Mattocks are often called a 'pick axe' but this is incorrect, neither the pick mattock or the grubbing mattock has a 'pick' at one end and an 'axe' at the other.
