Secateurs

Allotment Secateurs

When it comes to cutting larger stems and stalks a pair of secateurs is hard to beat. They do come in two varieties, Anvil or Bypass which does cause some confusion. Our 'How to Choose' guide below will assist you in making the choice. One common situation is that secateurs are used by ladies and men on the same plot, and when the secateurs are wide open this can cause hand fatigue for ladies but is fine for men's larger hands. This can be solved with secateurs that have a switch that limits the opening width, a very useful recent innovation.

How to Choose Secateurs

Bypass Secateurs
This design is particularly suited for pruning green or living stems, the two curved blades will slice through the stem cleanly.
Clean cut stems will heal quicker and be less open to infections.
Anvil Secateurs
This design is for dead and dry stems, the blade closes on a flat surface, the anvil, severing the stem. This type is unsuitable for green stems as it will crush them before cutting them. This crushed area around the cut can lead to infections and other problems.
Other Features
PTFE or similar coated blades - These 'non-stick' type coating allow the blade to slice through the stems easily
Rubber or cushioned grips - Help relieve hand fatigue when pruning
Two Position Hand Switch - Limits the opening of the blades to allow easier use by people with small and large hands.
